Coaching Basketball Made Me a Better Lab Technician
The similarities may surprise you
At first, you might think that coaching youth Basketball and working as a lab technician are worlds apart, but they have a lot in common when it comes to teamwork, attention to detail, goals and other aspects.
Mentoring
For me, mentoring is a key similarity. Just like I mentor my students, both on and off the court, I have appreciated the mentoring I have received both from former coaches and, more recently, from my lab teammates, who have taken me under their wing and shown me the ropes. Mentoring not only teaches – it fosters communication, builds friendships, and pushes you to improve your skills.
There are other similarities:
Teamwork
I work with other coaches, players and sometimes parents to create a positive environment to achieve team goals. In the lab, I work with other technicians, researchers and scientists to achieve the laboratory’s goals.
Communication
To motivate my players, I must be able to explain strategies clearly and give constructive feedback. In the lab, communication is crucial when following lab protocols, documenting findings or discussing issues with my colleagues.
Attention to Detail
As a coach, I must pay close attention to the players, analyze techniques, adjust game plans and ensure that drills are correctly executed. As a lab technician, I must also pay close attention, measure accurately, and document everything. I have to ensure that protocols are followed – just like making sure a play is run correctly.
Time Management & Organization
Planning practices, setting schedules, and making the most of limited game time teaches you how to manage time effectively. Labs operate on strict schedules, and I must juggle multiple experiments, keep track of data, and ensure deadlines and schedules are met.
Learning & Adapting
Every game and practice teaches me something new, and I adjust accordingly. Science constantly evolves, and lab technicians must continuously learn new techniques and adapt to new technologies.
Passion for Improvement
I am proud when I can help players grow and push them to improve their skills. In the lab, I feel a sense of accomplishment that I can contribute to scientific discoveries and advancements. Both of these require a drive for continuous improvement.
In short, coaching youth basketball has given me skills in teamwork, time management, communication, and attention to detail – all of which are valuable in a lab setting. At the core, both require a shared goal of pushing boundaries – whether about athletic performance or scientific knowledge.
Keyshawn has been coaching students in both Varsity and Junior Varsity Basketball at TechBoston Academy for the past year. His division 4 team is among the top 5 in the city and ranks 14th statewide.
